One of the most satisfying parts of owning a home is having a space to share with the ones you love, especially pets! Naturally, every good pet owner wants to create a safe and comfortable space for their furry friends. We buy the beds, the perches, the scratchers, and the crates, and select safe window treatments that everyone can enjoy.
That last one may have surprised you, but safe window treatments are an important topic for pet owners that don’t get discussed enough. We may laugh at funny videos of cats and dogs getting tangled in blinds because we know it all works out alright, but when it happens in reality, it isn’t funny at all. Your blinds are damaged, and your furry friend was put in serious danger.
So, what can you do to make your window treatments as safe as possible for your pets?
We’ve created a guide to help put your mind at ease, with the top three factors to look for and examples from our favorite Hunter Douglas Window Treatments.
Cordless
The most obvious danger to your pets is a corded adjustment. Cats are especially curious about anything with strings, so not only are they a tangling danger for cats, but they’re also prone to damage your window treatments. Go for cordless and wand-less window treatments instead to eliminate both the danger and the annoyance.

Slat-Free
Blinds are the most common window treatments in U.S. homes, which makes their slats the next most common danger for your pets after corded adjustments. Cats and dogs love windows with good view-through and often stick their head or paws between the slats of blinds to get a better view. This puts both them and your blinds in danger.
Instead, go with a smooth, slat-free product such as Design Studio™ Roller Shades or Alustra® Woven Textures® Roller Shades. That way, even if pets stick their heads behind the shades to improve view-through, there is nothing to get tangled in. Your window treatments will last longer, and you’ll feel better about them.
Short
The last danger on the list is more commonly a danger for the window treatments themselves: long drapery. Although pets can get tangled up in trailing curtains, they’re more likely to climb or pull at the curtains, damaging them. Replacing them often can be hard on your wallet and a cause of strife between you and your pet, so the safest bet is to go with a short window treatment.
